PIRATE RADIO WERE A FIVE PIECE FROM THE DREARY COLLEGE TOWN OF EUGENE, OREGON, WHO PLAYED CLASSIC ROCK AND ROLL STREET PUNK. THIS RELEASE, TITLED "WRECK 'EM ALL," WAS A LIMITED D.I.Y. CD-R ISSUED IN 2008 BY ROTTEN APPLE RECORDS. IT CONTAINS 17 TRACKS, INCLUDING A COVER OF THE DEAD BOYS' "SONIC REDUCER," AND A SONG CALLED "ALTERED BEAST," AN ODE TO THE CLASSIC ARCADE GAME AND A SONG TITLE SHARED WITH L.A.'S MOTHERSPEED AND AUSTRALIA'S KING GIZZARD AND THE LIZARD WIZARD. THE BAND CONSISTED OF JOHN CAIN ON VOCALS, TEREN BAKER AND JAMESON COWMAN ON GUITARS, LEN BOSKET ON BASS, AND TAYLOR COWMAN ON DRUMS. IT WAS OBTAINED FROM THE BAND VIA TRADE WHILE ON TOUR IN OREGON.
CENTIPEDES CIRCUS IS A MULTIFARIOUS PROJECT FORMED SOMETIME AROUND THE MID-1990'S IN THE FOOTHILLS OF EASTERN SAN DIEGO COUNTY. THE PRIMARY CREATIVE FORCE BEHIND CENTIPEDES CIRCUS IS A RECLUSIVE, ECCENTRIC MUSICIAN WHO IS KNOWN SIMPLY AS RYAN H. HE BEGAN WRITING SONGS STARTING ABOUT 1994 AND CONTINUES TO WRITE MATERIAL UP TO THE PRESENT. THE LACK OF A SUSTAINED BACKING BAND HAS FORCED HIM TO MAINLY WRITE AND PLAY ACOUSTIC, FOLK-ORIENTED SONGS WITH ODD TITLES, QUIRKY LYRICS, WHICH SOMETIMES CONTAIN CRUDE AND OFFENSIVE SUBJECT MATTER. OVER THE DECADES, THERE HAVE PROBABLY BEEN UPWARDS OF TWO HUNDRED SONGS PENNED UNDER THE UMBRELLA OF CENTIPEDES CIRCUS.
BETWEEN 1999 AND 2000, AT ZAROFF STUDIOS IN MOUNTAINTOP, CALIFORNIA, A COLLECTION OF THIRTY-THREE SONGS CALLED "CAT LESIONS" WERE ASSEMBLED AND RECORDED ON A FOUR-TRACK CASSETTE RECORDER, USING ACOUSTIC AND ELECTRIC GUITARS, SYNTHESIZERS, VARIOUS PERCUSSION INSTRUMENTS, AND MISCELLANEOUS SAMPLES. IF THE MATERIAL HAD TO BE DESCRIBED, IT COULD BE COMPARED TO SOMETHING BETWEEN BECK, WEEN, AND MID 1960'S TO EARLY 1970'S PSYCHEDELIC ROCK, FOLK, AND AMERICANA. THE VAST MAJORITY OF THE MUSIC AND WAS WRITTEN, ARRANGED AND PERFORMED BY RYAN H., WITH SOME ADDITIONAL SONGWRITING BY SOMEONE CALLED ELLIOT C. GHALDING (WHO MAY OR MAY NOT NOW BE DECEASED). ALL LYRICS AND VOCALS WERE WRITTEN AND PERFORMED BY RYAN H. THE BASS ON THIS RECORDING WAS WRITTEN AND PERFORMED BY BASSIST MIKE GRAY, AND LEAD GUITAR ON ONE TRACK, "LEAVING STONECREEK," WAS PERFORMED BY CHANCE BRAY.
"CAT LESIONS" WAS TRANSFERRED TO MP3 FORMAT AT SOME POINT, THEN SAT ON A HARD DRIVE FOR YEARS AFTER BEING FORGOTTEN ABOUT. IT WAS RECENTLY RECOVERED AND FINALLY RELEASED IN DIGITAL FORMAT BY PLASTIC FACT RECORDS IN COORDINATION WITH MOUNTAINTOP MUZIC. THIS IS DEFINITELY SOMETHING THAT SHOULD BE FILED UNDER LO-FI, AND CONTAINS SOME FAIRLY CONTROVERSIAL TOPICS, AS WELL AS LYRICS THAT COULD BE CONSIDERED OFFENSIVE. FAIR WARNING.
SELF-TITLED 7 INCH EP 1992 IMMATURE RECORDS / ZAFIO RECORDS IR-001 / Z-1
BEFORE BLATZ AND THE CRIMINALS, THERE WERE THE GR'UPS. FEATURING DUALING VOCALS FROM FUTURE BLATZ MEMEBERS JESSE LUSCIOUS AND ANNA JOY, THEY PLAYED A BLEND OF GARAGE PUNK AND ROCKABILLY, AND HAD A TOTAL OF FOUR RELEASES (INCLUDING THIS ONE, WHICH WAS MOST LIKELY THE SECOND RELEASE, FOLLOWING A SINGLE-SIDED CASSETTE, BOTH RELEASED IN 1992). IT SEEMS THEY WERE ONLY ACTIVE FOR ABOUT TWO YEARS, UNTIL THE FORMATION OF BLATZ, AND LATER THE CRIMINALS, IN THE MID-1990'S. EVENTUALLY THE GR'UPS REUNITED AROUND 2011 AND RELEASED A COMPILATION LP AND PLAYED A FEW SHOWS TO PROMOTE THE RECORD.
THIS EP WAS RECORDED JUNE 13, 1992 BY KEVIN ARMY, BILL, AND LINT AT SOUND VISION, MIXED BY THE GR'UPS WITH KEVIN ARMY JUNE 19, 1992 AT DANCING DOG, AND MASTERED BY KEN LEE AT SONIC ARTS. THE LINE UP CONSISTED OF JESSE LUSCIOUS AND ANNA JOY ON VOCALS, DEB DISASTER (QUEEN MAB) ON BASS, MATT FREEMAN (RANCID, M.D.C.) ON GUITAR, AND KAMALA LYN PARKS (CRINGER, NAKED AGGRESSION) ON DRUMS. THE TRACKS FROM THIS EP WERE LATER USED AS THE FIRST FIVE TRACKS ON THE 2011 COMPILATION LP, "A LI'L LOST." THE LYRICS TO THE SONG, "OINK," WERE COWRITTEN BY JESSE LUSCIOUS AND ANNIE LALANIA FROM BLATZ.

NOT IN MY SKATEPARK 2004 CD HILLBILLY STEW RECORDS HBS140
SK8 OR DIE FROM SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA, CONSISTED ON THIS CD, OF BROTHERS BRUCE GLASSES ON BASS AND VOCALS AND REVEREND BRANDAN ON GUITAR AND VOCALS, WITH ADAM SLEEPER ON DRUMS. THIS CD WAS RECORDED BY ROB LOGIC AND RELEASED ON HILLBILLY STEW RECORDS IN 2004. SK8 OR DIE PLAYED POP PUNK SONGS ABOUT SKATING (NATURALLY), HATING ROLLERBLADERS, AND RIDING THE BUS. FROM THE INSERT (WHICH IS SOMEWHAT DIFFICULT TO READ, AS IT IS BLACK TEXT OVER A BLACK AND WHITE BACKGROUND IMAGE):
"SO IT ALL STARTED IN 1997. BRUCE AND BRANDAN ARE BROTHERS AND BRUCE PLAYED DRUMS HORRIBLY FOR A SHOW BY BRANDAN'S FIRST BAND, THE SOCIOPATHS. BRUCE PREVIOUSLY PLAYED IN VARIOUS BANDS THAT YOU HAVE NEVER HEARD OF BETWEEN 1991 AND 1996. THE SOCIOPATHS NEVER PLAYED A SHOW AGAIN, BUT BRUCE NAD BRANDAN STARTED SHOWING UP IN VARIOUS PUBLIC PLACES, STEALING ELECTRICITY OR USING BATTERIES TO POWER THEIR AMPS, PLAYING COVERS WITH WILD ABANDON, AND CALLING IT RAMONES VS. GODZILLA (RvsG). AFTER A WHILE WE DECIDED TO MAKE A 'REAL' BAND AND CREATED KELLEY LEAK GOES TO JAPAN (KLGtJ), IN ALL ITS BOOHOO ABOUT GIRLS AND HIGH SCHOOL GLORY, WITH A DRUMMER THEY FOUND DURING A RvsG FIASCO OUTSIDE OF THE DORMS AT SAN DIEGO STATE UNIVERSITY. KLGtJ PLAYED FROM WINTER OF 2000 UNTIL SUMMER OF 2001 WHEN THE ORIGINAL DRUMMER IN THAT BAND DISAPPEARED TO MONTANA A WEEK BEFORE A SHOW. SO WE GOT SOME CHOAD TO DRUM INSTEAD. AFTER OUR FIRST SHOW TOGETHER, SOME CHOAD DECIDED HE DIDN'T LIKE THE KLGtJ VIBE, SO WE DECIDED TO DO SK8 OR DIE WHICH WE HAD BEEN THINKING ABOUT DOING FOR A WHILE. WE PUT OUT A SPLIT 7 INCH WITH OUR FRIENDS THE RUMINANTS IN THE LATE MONTHS OF 2001 AND PLAYED SHOWS. THEN SOME CHOAD DECIDED THAT WE WEREN'T KISSING HIS ASS ENOUGH, GOT HUFFY THAT WE WOULDN'T TURN INTO AN INDIE ROCK BAND, AND HE QUIT. THEN WE GOT ADAM IN THE SUMMER OF 2002. HE USED TO DRUM FOR DANNY TANNER AND WENT TO HIGH SCHOOL WITH BRANDAN. HE WAS NOT ALL LAME, SO HERE WE ARE."
IN ADDITION TO DRUMMING FOR DANNY TANNER AND SK8 OR DIE, ADAM SLEEPER ALSO PLAYED IN THE BOISE, IDAHO STREET PUNK BAND N.F.F.U., PERFORMED VOCALS FOR THE SAN DIEGO COMEDIC SCUM ROCK BAND NEVERLAND RANCH HANDS (WHO WERE FEATURED ON BOTH PLASTIC FACT EATERS VOLUME 1 AND PLASTIC FACT EATERS VOLUME 2 CD COMPILATIONS), FILLED IN AS A MEMBER OF SAN DIEGO'S FLAGSHIP PYRATE PUNX BAND BASURA, AND PLAYED IN THE SHORT-LIVED PROJECT S.D.C. MP3'S RIPPED AT 320 KBPS.

SELF-TITLED 7 INCH EP 2001 SLAVES TO DARKNESS RECORDS, STD-001
THE DRATS WERE A FOUR-PIECE STREET PUNK BAND FROM SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA WHO PLAYED FROM SOMETIME IN THE MID-TO-LATE 1990'S INTO THE EARLY 2000'S. THERE ARE APPARENTLY SEVERAL OTHER BANDS OPERATING UNDER THIS NAME, BUT THIS POST IS ABOUT ONLY THE SAN DIEGO-BASED BAND. THIS EP WAS THE DEBUT RELEASE FROM SLAVES TO DARKNESS RECORDS, WHICH, ASIDE FROM THIS 7 INCH, ALSO PUT OUT BUMBKLAATT'S DEBUT 7 INCH, AND CO-RELEASED BUMBKLAATT'S "CIEGOS" EP (ON CD) WITH DESPOTIC RECORDS, BACTERIA SOUR, CRYPTAS RECORDS AND REACCIONA (THE LATTER TWO LABELS RELEASED A REISSUE OF "CIEGOS IN 2007 AND ARE BASED IN MEXICO).
THE DRATS WERE COMPRISED OF KENNY LABBACHER, RYAN JONES, DJ DEFLORIO, AND BRANDON FINK. THERE IS NO INFORMATION ON WHERE THIS EP WAS RECORDED. A LIMITED RUN OF BLUE TRANSLUCENT VINYL WAS ISSUED, WITH THE REST PRESUMABLY RELEASED ON STANDARD BLACK VINYL.
"WHITEBELLY" WAS THE DEBUT CD FROM SAN DIEGO PUNK TRIO THE MICE. IT WAS RELEASED IN 1999 ON HEADLESS RECORDS. AS STATED BEFORE, THE MICE USED TO BE A FOUR PIECE CALLED BILLYCLUB, BUT BECAME THE MICE WHEN THEIR VOCALIST LEFT THE BAND DUE TO PERSONAL ISSUES. THE REMAINING MEMBERS CONTINUED ON AND RELEASED SEVERAL CDS OVER THE YEARS, AND ARE STILL SOMEWHAT ACTIVE TODAY, TWO DECADES LATER.
ROB LOGIC AND TRAVIS POE SHARE LEAD AND BACKING VOCALS, WITH ROB PLAYING GUITAR AND TRAVIS PLAYING BASS, WHILE RAUL HANDLES THE DRUMMING DUTIES. AT ONE POINT THE BAND AS A WHOLE WERE ALSO IN THE SAN DIEGO DRUNK PUNK BAND THE HOMELESS SEXUALS.
ROB HAS ALSO PLAYED GUITAR FOR LIFE CRISIS AND DEATH CRISIS, AND HAS RECORDED COUNTLESS BANDS.
THIS ALBUM IS CLASSIC SAN DIEGO PUNK ROCK FROM THE LATE 1990'S, CAPTURING THE ESSENCE OF THE LOCAL SCENE AT THE TIME. TENOR SAXOPHONE WAS PERFORMED BY JOHN "HOOT" MCDONALD ON THE TRACKS "PORN" AND "PUDDIN' PIE." "WHITEBELLY" WAS ENGINEERED BY BEN MOORE AT GOLDENTRACKS STUDIOS. IT WAS MIXED AT BIG FISH, AND MASTERED BY BOB PANTAGES AT HIDEAWAY MASTERING. RIPPED AT 320 KBPS.
DODGEBALL WERE A FEMALE-FRONTED FOUR PIECE POP PUNK BAND FROM SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA. THEIR LINE UP WAS MONICA ON VOCALS, COLIN ON GUITAR, PORTER ON BASS, AND MIKE ON DRUMS. "FULLY LINED" WAS RECORDED AT 4D BY FRANK MELENDEZ, AND WAS RELEASED IN 1995 BY YELL-O RECORDS. THERE WERE TWO EDITIONS, ONE ON STANDARD BLACK VINILY AND ONE ON TRANSLUCENT RED VINYL. THE BAND LATER RELEASED THE EP "BEANS" ON 7 INCH VINYL ON GOLDENROD RECORDS IN 1996, FOLLOWED BY A SELF-RELEASED 1998 DEMO CASSETTE ALONG WITH ANOTHER DEMO CASSETTE (UNKNOWN RELEASE DATE), AND THE FULL LENGTH CD "HOORAY FOR EVERYTHING," ALSO RELEASED ON GOLDENROD RECORDS. DODGEBALL PLAYED A UNIQUE FLAVOR OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA PUNK WITH A POP FLAIR, AND A SLIGHT BIT OF GRIT ADDED INTO THE MIX.
MP3S RIPPED FROM VINYL AND NORMALIZED TO REMOVE DC OFFSET (THIS STEP WAS OVERLOOKED ON SOME OF THE MUSIC UP ON THE YOUTUBE PAGE, BUT EVERYTHING UPLOADED TO THIS BLOG THAT WAS PULLED FROM A VINYL SOURCE HAS HAD THE AUDIO NORMALIZED).
"THE DEVOURING" IS THE SECOND AND FINAL RELEASE FROM THE SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA HARDCORE CRUST PUNK TRIO THE AMERICANS. IT FOLLOWED UP THEIR 2006 SELF-TITLED CD, BOTH OF WHICH WERE INDEPENDENTLY PRODUCED AND RELEASED. FOLLOWING THE RELEASE OF "THE DEVOURING," THE AMERICANS SPLIT WHEN DRUMMER DAN MOVED TO SEATTLE, WASHINGTON, AND GUITARIST SEAN AND BASSIST BLAINE WENT ON TO FORM AGE OF COLLAPSE.
THIS CD WAS RECORDED AND MIXED BY ROB LOGIC AT 25/44, AND MASTERED BY JEFF FORREST AT DOUBLE TIME STUDIOS. "THE DEVOURING" SEEMS TO HAVE BEEN A BIT MORE PUT-TOGETHER CONCEPTUALLY, AND IN RETROSPECT, THE DIRECTION TOWARDS A HEAVIER ANARCHO-CRUST SOUND, ALONG WITH THE MORE BLEAK AND NIHILISTIC THEMES OF AGE OF COLLAPSE, ARE NOTICEABLY APPARENT.
MILITIAS MISCHIEF WERE A THREE-PIECE PUNK BAND FROM ABERDEEN, WASHINGTON. THEY WERE ALENA MISCHIEF ON GUITAR AND VOCALS, BART HORRIBLE ON LEAD GUITAR, DEAN-O ON BASS, AND CRITTEN ON DRUMS. IT IS UNLIKELY THAT THE BAND RELEASED ANYTHING OTHER THAN THIS DEMO, WHICH CAME OUT ON CD-R IN 2009. ALENA WENT ON TO PLAY IN BREMERTON'S THE ASSASINATORS FOR A SHORT DURATION. THIS DEMO WAS ACCQUIRED FROM THE BAND AT THE 2010 LIBERTATIA FESTIVAL IN SOUTHERN OREGON, A THREE DAY CAMPING EVENT PUT ON BY THE VARIOUS CHAPTERS OF THE PYRATE PUNX FROM UP AND DOWN THE WEST COAST OF THE UNITED STATES.
PRIOR TO THE RELEASE OF THE FILTHY FUKS' DEBUT 7 INCH EP, THEY INDEPENDENTLY RELEASED A HANDFUL OF SELF-PRODUCED DEMOS, AND THIS STUDIO-RECORDED EP, "FUK YOU UP," WHICH WAS RECORDED AND MIXED BY ROB LOGIC, AND RELEASED IN 2008 ON CD-R. EVERYTHING THE BAND HAD RELEASED BEFORE THIS WERE TRACKS RECORDED BY THE BAND, SO THIS WAS THEIR FIRST SEMI-PROFESSIONALLY RECORDED EFFORT. EIGHT TRACKS OF CLASSIC FILTHY FUKS WITH RALDO ON VOCALS, JOEY IDOL ON GUITAR AND BACKING UP VOCALS, DANNY DYSENTERY ON BASS AND BACK UP VOCALS, AND KEVIN "SAMMY JAM" ON DRUMS.
