THIS ONE HAS BEEN IN THE VAULT (READ: A CARDBOARD BOX OF OLD TAPES) SINCE ABOUT 1995, WHEN IT WAS PURCHASED AT A LOCAL SHOW FOR THREE TO FIVE DOLLARS BY A NAIVE JUNIOR HIGH NERD WHO WAS JUST DISCOVERING THE NOOKS AND CRANNIES OF LOCAL MUSIC AND UNDERGROUND CULTURE.  WHEN A PORTABLE TURNTABLE-CASSETTE PLAYER COMBO WITH AN SD CARD SLOT, USB PORT AND MP3 RECORDING CAPABILITIES WAS ADDED TO THE HOUSEHOLD TOYBOX, ALL LOCAL, RARE, AND INDEPENDENT VINYL EP'S AND CASSETTES WERE CONVERTED AND UPLOADED TO YOUTUBE FOR THE SAKE OF POSTERITY AND CONVENIENCE OF ACCESS FOR THE MASSES (THE MASSES BEING AROUND ONE HUNDRED-FORTY YOUTUBE SUBSCRICERS).  CD'S WERE ALREADY POSTED EARLIER THIS YEAR, BUT THE LP'S STILL NEED TO BE CONVERTED, SO THERE IS A LITTLE MORE TO COME.  MUCH OF THE MUSIC THAT WAS POSTED ON YOUTUBE IS SLOWLY BEING ADDED TO THIS BLOG.   
THIS CASSETTE MAY NOT MEET THE LOOSE SPECIFICATIONS OF A TYPICAL PLASTIC FACT RECORDS BLOG POST, BUT IT'S ONE OF THOSE ITEMS THAT YOU COME ACROSS WHEN DIGGING THROUGH OLD STUFF THAT INCITES A SENSE OF NOSTALGIA AND MAKES YOU WANT TO SHARE IT WITH PEOPLE WHO MIGHT ALSO RECOGNIZE AND APPRECIATE IT, HOWEVER UN-PUNK IT MAY BE.  MORE AND MORE LATELY, THE ENTRIES POSTED HERE HAVE BEEN FEATURING ODDS AND ENDS THAT AREN'T NECESSARILY WITHIN THE CONFINES OF PLASTIC FACT RECORDS RELEASES, I.E. IN THE VEIN OF PUNK, THRASH, OR HARDCORE, BUT IT IS LIKELY THAT MORE DIVERSE MATERIAL AND LOOSE ENDS WILL APPEAR HERE IN THE FUTURE.  
GHOULSPOON BEGAN ORIGINALLY IN KONA, HAWAII, IN 1989, WHILE THE MEMBERS WERE STILL IN HIGH SCHOOL.  THEY RELOCATED TO TACOMA, WASHINGTON, JUST PRIOR TO THE RISE OF NIRVANA AND THE MASSIVE GRUNGE POP-CULTURE TAKEOVER.  SOON THEY FOUND THEMSELVES IN SAN DIEGO, AND PLAYED THEIR FIRST SHOW AT THE ORIGINAL CASBAH LOCATION IN 1991.  THEY GAINED A SUBSTANTIAL FOLLOWING PLAYING FOR ALL AGES CROWDS AT THE ORIGINAL DOWNTOWN SOMA LOCATION DURING AN ERA IN THE SAN DIEGO SCENE WHEN THERE WASN'T AS MUCH DIVISION BETWEEN BANDS AND AUDIENCES ALONG LINES OF GENRE AND STYLE.  WHILE MANY BANDS WERE FOCUSING ON TRYING TO CATCH THE EARS OF MAJOR LABELS BY JUMPING ABOARD THE GRUNGE TRAIN, OR PLAYING WEST COAST SKATE AND POP PUNK, GHOULSPOON WERE DOING THEIR OWN THING, SLIGHTLY AHEAD OF THEIR TIME.  THEIR STYLE WOULD  FALL INTO THE CATEGORY OF WHAT WOULD EVENTUALLY BE COINED "NU-METAL," ALTHOUGH, AT LEAST ON THIS RELEASE, THEY SEEM TO BE DOING SOMETHING A LITTLE MORE UNIQUE, SLIGHTLY SIMILAR TO SOMETHING FROM BANDS LIKE FAITH NO MORE, PERHAPS A LITTLE WEIRDER AND DARKER.  THEY SHARED LOCAL STAGES WITH BANDS SUCH AS SPRUNG MONKEY, BUCK-O-NINE, BLINK (PRE AND POST-182), UNWRITTEN LAW, AND P.O.D.  THEY WOULD TOUR REGIONALLY WITH MAJOR HEADLINERS INCLUDING INCUBUS, KORN, NO DOUBT, SUBLIME, STATIC-X, SUGAR RAY, FOO FIGHTER, SYSTEM OF A DOWN, SNOT, POWERMAN 5000, YOU GET THE IDEA.  
GHOULSPOON INDEPENDENTLY RELEASED TWO DEMOS IN 1992, THIS SELF-TITLED THREE TRACK CASSETTE, AND ANOTHER TITLED "YOU WILL LEARN" WITH FIVE TRACKS, A TWO TRACK 7 INCH EP IN 1993 ON AMIGO RECORDS TITLED "HARLEY WAS A DRAG QUEEN,"  (THE COVER ART SEEMS TO INDICATE THAT THE TITLE IS IN REFERENCE TO HARLEY DAVIDSON OF THE BAND DEADBOLT), THE FULL-LENGHT CD "MEDICATION" ON IMMUNE RECORDS IN 1996, AND A SIX-SONG CD EP TITLED "FEVER," FEATURING A COVER OF THE CARS SONG "YOU'RE ALL I'VE GOT TONIGHT," IN 1999.  THEY EARNED SEVERAL NOMINATIONS FROM THE SAN DIEGO MUSIC AWARDS AND WON FOR "BEST HARD ROCK/METAL BAND" IN 2001.  OVER ALL, GHOULSPOON WAS ABLE TO SELL 10,000 COPIES OF THEIR RELEASES WITH NO BOOKING AGENT, MANAGER, OR MAJOR LABEL.  FINALLY IN 2002 AFTER SEVERAL LINEUP CHANGES, THEY CHANGED THEIR NAME TO DIVIDED BY ZERO.  (YES, A LOT OF THIS POST WAS TAKEN FROM THEIR BIO ON DISCOGS.COM.)  
THE CASSETTE COVER INFORMS US THAT THIS DEMO WAS RELEASED BY SPOON-FED PRODUCTIONS, MOST LIKELY GHOULSPOON'S OWN DIY PRODUCTION OUTFIT, AND ENGINEERED BY SHAWN POWER AT A.M.B. STUDIOS.  THE ART ON THE COVER (PICTURED ABOVE) WAS CREATED BY JAMES GOODE.  GHOULSPOON'S LINE-UP AT THIS TIME WAS ZACHARY GOODE ON VOCALS, JEREMY RONSTADT ON GUITAR, MARKUS LOWE ON BASS, AND CLAUDE BALLS ON DRUMS.  THE OUTSIDE AND INSIDE COVER HAVE BEEN INCLUDED, WITH LYRICS, CREDITS, AND THANK YOU'S FROM THE BAND.
THIS IS BEING POSTED FOR ANYONE AROUND THAT SAW THESE GUYS OVER THE YEARS IN THE 1990'S, WHETHER IN A SMALL ALL AGES VENUE LIKE SOUL KITCHEN IN EL CAJON, A DIVE BAR, AT SOMA DOWNTOWN OR THE METRO STREET WAREHOUSE IN LINDA VISTA, OR OPENING FOR A LARGER MAINSTREAM ACT, WHO MIGHT WANT TO FEEL A LITTLE SENSE OF NOSTALGIA FOR A TIME WHEN THINGS WEREN'T SO STRICTLY SEGREGATED BASED ON GENRE.  THAT'S HOW IT SEEMED AT THE TIME, AT LEAST.

ACCORDING TO IDIOTEQ.COM, ROADKILL CARNIVORE BEGAN IN VANCOUVER, WASHINGTON AS A THREE-PIECE HARDCORE THRASH BAND, WITH DANIEL STOUT ON GUITAR, MAT SKILES ON BASS, AND SHANE HARTMAN ON DRUMS.  DANIEL AND SHANE SHARED VOCALS UNTIL LATE 2009, WHEN BRYAN BEHRNDT JOINED ON LEAD VOCALS.  THEY BEGAN BILLING THEMSELVES AS R.K.C., BUT WOULD ALSO CONTINUE PLAYING AS ROADKILL CARNIVORE.  SOON THEY RELOCATED TO PORTLAND, OREGON, AND RECORDED A DEMO VERSION OF THEIR FIRST FULL LENGTH ALBUM "ROADKILL CARNIVORE" IN THEIR LIVING ROOM, WHICH THEY RELEASED IN THE SPRING OF 2010.  MOST LIKELY, THIS IS WHAT IS BEING POSTED HERE.  THE PROPER VERSION OF THE FULL-LENGTH SELF-TITLED ALBUM WAS RELEASED SOMETIME LATER ON TORN FLESH RECORDS (CHECK OUT THEIR PAGE, THERE ARE A TON OF RELEASES AVALIABLE FOR FREE).  IN THE SPRING OF 2011, THEY RELEASED THEIR SECOND FULL-LENGTH ON TORN FLESH, BARRAGE OF LURKERS.  THEY WENT ON A 15 SHOW U.S. TOUR THROUGH THE MIDWEST AND WEST COAST IN THE SUMMER OF 2011.  RANDANGLE, THEIR THIRD FULL-LENGTH, WAS RELEASED IN 2014 ON TORN FLESH.  IN 2018, R.K.C.  DROPPED ANOTHER RELEASE, AN 18 TRACK GREATEST-HITS TYPE COLLECTION CALLED THE FIRST FOUR LOKOS.  ALL THOSE CAN BE OBTAINED BY FOLLOWING THE PROVIDED LINKS.  HERE IS THE ORIGINAL DEMO VERSION OF ROADKILL CARNIVORE, THE DISC SAYS "RKC DEMO '11."  SO DOWNLOAD IT, GRAB A FOUR LOKO (OH THAT'S RIGHT, THEY DON'T MAKE THOSE ANYMORE), AND BLAZE UP & KILL.

THERE ISN'T A LOT OF INFORMATION AVAILABLE ABOUT GHIDRAH, OTHER THAN THE FACT THAT THEY WERE FROM LAFAYETTE, LOUISIANA.  THIS EP CAME OUT IN 2005.  IT WAS THE THIRD RELEASE ON GET REVENGE! RECORDS, THE LABEL OPERATED BY SEAN FROM LIFE CRISIS, DEATH CRISIS, THINK TWICE, AND CHRISTIAN CLUB.  GHIDRAH ALSO MADE AN APPEARANCE ON THE SICK OF TALK RECORDS 7 INCH COMPILATION EP UNSCENE EFFORT VOLUME 2½.  GHIDRAH CONSISTED OF CHRYSI AND JARED ON GUITARS AND DUELING LEAD VOCALS (A POWERFUL COMBO), DANNY ON BASS, AND DANIEL ON DRUMS.  DANIEL WAS ALSO IN MANY OTHER LAFAYETTE AREA BANDS INCLUDING KILLSWITCH, REASON OF INSANITY, SEX BOMB, THE POOTS, THE PALLBEARERS, FUGITIVE FAMILY, VIKINGS, FINAL ASSAULT, ONE COMMON VOICE, AND MORE.  THIS EP WAS RECORDED BY IVAN KLISANIN AT BOB'S RECORDS TO GO IN LAFAYETTE, AND WAS INCLUDED ON THE GET REVENGE! COMPILATION "RAW AGGRESSION" THAT FEATURED ALL OF THE LABEL'S VINYL RELEASES ON ONE CD (WHICH HAS MYSTERIOUSLY DISAPPEARED FROM THE ARCHIVES, UNFORTUNATELY).  OTHER THAN THE BAND'S SPARSE ENTRY ON DISCOGS.COM AND THE LIVE VIDEO INCLUDED AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS POST, THE ONLY INFO THAT COULD BE FOUND ONLINE IS (INTERNET ARCHIVE LINK) THIS SHORT REVIEW FROM THE WINTER 2005-SPRING 2006 ISSUE OF PROFANE EXISTENCE MAGAZINE:

"GHIDRAH IS A THRASHING PUNK MONSTER FROM THE SWAMPY BAYOUS OF LAFAYETTE, LOUISIANA, HELLBENT ON DESTROYING ALL GOVERNMENTS AND RIGHT-WING INSTITUTIONS.  THESE SOUTHERNERS PLAY FAST AND AGGRESSIVE PUNK WITH SOLID BREAKDOWNS, AND VERY POLITICAL LYRICS, SHOUTED OUT BY MALE AND FEMALE VOCALISTS.  THIS IS A BRUTAL RECORD, AND I WANT MORE. GREGORY PAGE HAS BEEN A STAPLE OF THE LOCAL SAN DIEGO SINGER-SONGWRITER SCENE FOR MANY YEARS, RELENTLESSLY CHURNING OUT A UNIQUE BLEND OF SMOOTH, JAZZY CROONER-FOLK, AMERICANA, BLUEGRASS, AND CABARET, IN THE TRADITION OF JAMES TAYLOR, PAUL SIMON AND EVEN LEONARD COHEN, FOR UPWARDS OF THIRTY YEARS.  HE WAS THE ORIGINAL BASSIST FOR THE RUGBURNS, TOURING THE UNITED STATES AND PLAYING ON THEIR THREE RELEASES, "MORNING WOOD," "MOMMY, I'M SORRY," AND "TAKING THE WORLD BY DONKEY," BEFORE LEAVING TO PURSUE HIS SOLO CAREER FULL TIME. GREGORY WAS BORN IN APRIL, 1963, ON EASTER SUNDAY, IN NORTH LONDON, ENGLAND.  HIS ARMENIAN FATHER, KRIKOR HOVELIAN (GREGORY WOULD NOT MEET HIM FOR ABOUT FOUR DECADES AFTER HIS BIRTH), WAS A POP SINGER IN THE BAND THE MARTIANS, WHICH SPENT SOME OF THE SIXTIES  AMONG THE MANY BEAT GROUPS IN HAMBURG, GERMANY.  HIS MOTHER, MOY PAGE,  WAS AN IRISH SAXOPHONE PLAYER AND THE LEAD SINGER OF ONE OF BRITAIN'S FIRST ALL-FEMALE GROUPS, THE BEAT-CHICS, WHO OPENED FOR THE BEATLES FOR TWO SHOWS IN SPAIN IN 1965.  KRIKOR AND MOY MET WHILE ON TOUR, ON THEIR WAY TO THE MIDDLE EAST.

"NOW I KNOW" - THE BEAT-CHICS, DECCA RECORDS, 1964

GREGORY STUDIED CLASSICAL GUITAR AT LONDON'S TRINITY COLLEGE OF MUSIC.  AT THE AGE OF FOURTEEN HIS FAMILY RELOCATED TO THE UNITED STATES, LANDING HIM IN THE CALIFORNIA NEIGHBORHOOD OF NORTH PARK IN SAN DIEGO.  HE STARTED WRITING POETRY AND BECAME FOCUSED ON BECOMING A MORE SKILLED MUSICIAN.  WHEN GREGORY WAS ABOUT TWENTY-SEVEN YEARS OLD, HE DECIDED TO BEGIN TAKING SONG WRITING SERIOUSLY.  HE RELEASED HIS FIRST ALBUM, "DRAWING DOWN THE MOON," IN 1990.  HIS SECOND ALBUM, "THE ROMANTIC ADVENTURES OF HARRY," WAS RELEASED ON BED PAN RECORDINGS IN 1993, THEN RE-RECORDED AND RE-RELEASED IN 1996 ON BIZARRE/PLANET RECORDS.  HE JOINED THE RUGBURNS IN 1993 AND PLAYED WITH THEM UNTIL AROUND 1995 OR 1996.  FOR A LONG TIME HE PLAYED ALMOST MONTHLY (SOMETIMES MORE) AT OCEAN BEACH COFFEE HOUSE JAVA JOE'S.  HE FORMED A PROJECT CALLED THE HATCHET BROTHERS WITH FRANK LEE DRENNEN OF THE SAN DIEGO BAND LOAM.  HE WOULD CONTINUE TO PLAY JAVA JOE'S WHEN THE VENUE MOVED SEVERAL TIMES AND BECAME A BAR, AFTER THE ORIGINAL LOCATION WAS ACQUIRED BY STARBUCKS (MUCH TO THE IRE OF THE OCEAN BEACH RESIDENTS AND JAVA JOE'S REGULARS).  GREGORY BECAME A ROUTINELY FEATURED HEADLINER AT LESTAT'S, A COFFEE SHOP AND SMALL LIVE MUSIC VENUE IN THE KENSINGTON DISTRICT OF SAN DIEGO.  AFTER SEVERAL YEARS OF PERFORMING MAINLY LOCALLY AS A SOLO ARTIST, HE BEGAN TRAVELLING AND PERFORMING EXTENSIVELY AROUND THE WORLD.
GREGORY PAGE HAS PERFORMED WITH AND PRODUCED MUSIC FOR ARTISTS SUCH AS JASON MRAZ, TOM BROSSEAU, JOHN C. REILY, JEWEL, AND HAS EVEN OPENED FOR PEOPLE LIKE BOB DYLAN.  WHILE HE HASN'T HAD MUCH SUCCESS IN THE MAINSTREAM MARKET IN THE UNITED STATES, HE HAS DONE SOMEWHAT WELL IN EUROPE, PARTICULARLY GERMANY AND BELGIUM, AND HAS GATHERED A DEDICATED FOLLOWING OF FANS FROM AROUND THE WORLD.  
GREGORY PAGE IS AS AUTHENTIC AS YOU CAN GET.  TO QUOTE JASON MRAZ, "HE'S THE REAL DEAL."  HE IS A HUMBLE, PERSONABLE GENTLEMAN WHO IS ALWAYS APPROACHABLE AND NEVER DISMISSIVE.  HE IS NEVER TOO BUSY TO TALK WITH PEOPLE.  HE ALWAYS COMES ACROSS AS A REGULAR PERSON WHO JUST HAPPENS TO HAVE AN AMAZING WEALTH OF NATURAL TALENT AND SKILL.  IT IS OBVIOUS THAT HE LIVES TO WRITE AND PLAY MUSIC THAT HE LOVES.  HE SEEMS TO BE FROM ANOTHER ERA, EXUDING THE HIGHEST QUALITY MATERIAL IN A WORLD THAT ELEVATES "ARTISTS" WHO POSSESS VERY LITTLE TRUE TALENT.  DURING A TIME OF DEGENERACY AND SUPERFICIALITY, HE HAS BEEN AN ENDLESS REPOSITORY OF UNDISCOVERED CLASSICS.  PEOPLE ARE TRULY MISSING OUT.  IF YOU EVER HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO CATCH HIM LIVE, DO IT.

"THE JOHN DOE SESSIONS" WAS PRODUCED BY JOHN DOE OF CLASSIC LOS ANGELES PUNK BAND X (HENCE THE TITLE). IN ADDITION TO PRODUCING THE RECORD, JOHN DOE PERFORMED BACKING VOCALS AND ACOUSTIC GUITAR.  THE SONGS WERE RECORDED IN CHATSWORTH, CALIFORNIA IN OCTOBER, 1997 BY TRAVIS DICKERSON, WHO ALSO PLAYED PIANO ON THE RECORD.  THE MUSIC AND LYRICS FOR ALL SONGS WERE WRITTEN BY GREGORY PAGE, WITH THE EXCEPTION OF "THE GREAT MYSTERY," WHICH WAS CO-WRITTEN BY STEVE POLTZ OF THE RUGBURNS, WHO PERFORMED BACKING VOCALS ON THE SONG, AND "WAY BACK WHEN?" CO-WRITTEN BY SCOTT IRELAND. SCOTT IRELAND ALSO PERFORMED ELECTRIC AND ACOUSTIC SLIDE GUITAR AND BACKING VOCALS THROUGHOUT THE RECORD.  LEGENDARY DRUMMER JOSH FREESE OF THE VANDALS, DEVO AND NINE INCH NAILS, PLAYED DRUMS ON ALL TRACKS.  DAVID J. CARPENTER PLAYED ELECTRIC AND UPRIGHT BASS, WITH GREG LEISZ PLAYING ELECTRIC AND WEISENBORN GUITARS.  ADDITIONAL MUSICIANS WERE MONEY MARK ON KEYBOARDS, ELLIOT CANE ON TRUMPET, LILI HAYDEN ON VIOLIN, RICH WEISS ON PEDAL STEEL GUITAR, AND ROSEBUD ON BACKING VOCALS.

THIS IS ANOTHER POST THAT WILL BREAK FROM THE GENERAL RULE OF TRYING TO ONLY FEATURE SAN DIEGO-BASED BANDS ON THIS BLOG, SIMPLY BECAUSE THIS BAND WAS SO GOOD.  THIS CD-R WAS ACCQUIRED THROUGH A TRADE WITH KANGAROO RECORDS IN FRANCE.  DIRECT CONTROL FROM RICHMOND, VIRGINA RIPPED.  FRONTMAN BRANDON FERRALL (R.I.P.) HAD PLAYED IN OTHER BANDS, DRUMMING FOR MUNICIPAL WASTE AND GOVERNMENT WARNING, AMONG OTHERS.  DIRECT CONTROL PLAYED FAST HARDCORE THRASH PUNK WITH A HEAVY 80'S INFLUENCE.  THEY INDEPENDENTLY RELEASED A DEMO CASSETTE IN 2003, A CD COMPILATION, A SELF-TITLED 7 INCH EP ON KANGAROO IN 2004, AND THE 7 INCH EP "NUCLEAR TOMORROW" ON SORRY STATE RECORDS IN  2005.  THE LP "YOU'RE CONTROLLED" CAME OUT ON KANGAROO IN 2005 IN EUROPE, THEN WAS RE-ISSUED ON FERAL WARD AND ON FERRALL'S OWN LABEL, NO WAY RECORDS, IN 2006 IN THE U.S.  THEY DID A SPLIT WITH OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA'S STRUNG UP ON 12 INCH LP AND CD ON NO WAY RECORDS AND TANKCRIMES RECORDS.  AT SOME POINT ANOTHER CASSETTE CAME OUT, "LIVE ON THE RADIO," WHICH IS A RECORDING OF THE BAND PERFORMING ON A BOSTON RADIO STATION.  IN 2009 FERAL WARD RECORDS ISSUED THEIR FINAL STUDIO RELEASE, "FAREWELL," ON LP AND CD.  AFTER "FAREWELL," IN 2010, TANKCRIMES RELEASED A COLLECTION OF VARIOUS TRACKS CALLED "BUCKTOWN HARDCORE" ON CD.  DIRECT CONTROL EMBARKED ON A QUICK TOUR OF EUROPE BEFORE SPLITTING UP.  THIS CD-R WAS SOLD EXCLUSIVELY ON THAT TOUR.  THERE WERE SUPPOSEDLY ONLY 200 COPIES MADE, BUT THERE MAY HAVE BEEN ANOTHER SHORT RUN, JUDGING BY THE ALTERNATE COVER ARTWORK.  THERE WAS ALSO A CASSETTE VERSION.

THE SCALES TIPPED AWAY FROM CORPORATE-BACKED  FORMULATED, INSTANT HITS, TOWARD A FLOOD OF DIVERSE, INDEPENDENT, FRESH NEW SOUNDS AND IDEAS, WHICH HAD BEEN TAKING PLACE ALL ALONG BENEATH THE SURFACE, BUT NOW WERE BUBBLING UP INTO THE AWARENESS OF MASSIVE AMOUNTS OF AVERAGE CONSUMERS.  (IT SEEMS WE NOW FIND OURSELVES IN A SIMILAR HOMOGENOUS ATMOSPHERE ON A MAINSTREAM CULTURAL LEVEL OF ELECTRONICALLY OVER-PRODUCED POP, "HIP HOP," AND COUNTRY MUSIC, SONGS THAT CONSTANTLY UTILIZE LITERALLY IDENTICAL CHORD PROGRESSIONS, TO THE POINT WHERE DIFFERENT MUSICAL GENRES ARE INDISTINGUISHABLE.)   NIRVANA'S IMPACT ON CULTURE IS UNDENIABLE.  WHETHER THEY ARE YOUR CUP OF TEA OR NOT IS SUBJECTIVE.
DESPITE THE DENIAL OF MANY PEOPLE IN THE WORLD OF PUNK WHO FALL UNDER A CERTAIN AGE RANGE, ONE WAY OR ANOTHER, IF IT WEREN'T FOR NIRVANA, THEY WOULD PROBABLY NOT BE INTERESTED IN PUNK. 
(THE AUTHOR OF THIS BLOG WAS EXPOSED TO A LOT OF MUSIC FROM A YOUNG AGE, MAINLY CLASSIC ROCK AND EARLY HEAVY METAL, THEN INDEPENDENTLY  TOOK A LIKING TO TOM PETTY AND THE HEART BREAKERS -FIRST CONCERT AT THE AGE OF NINE-, AND ADMITTEDLY, INITIALLY BECAME AWARE OF THE WORLD OF PUNK DUE TO NIRVANA'S INFLUENCE)

IN THE 1990'S IT WAS NOT UNCOMMON TO SEE COUNTLESS NIRVANA BOOTLEG CDS ON SALE IN YOUR LOCAL RECORD STORE, OFTEN TIMES FOR UPWARDS OF $20.  THESE DAYS, THERE ARE WEBSITES DEDICATED TO CATALOGING EVERY SINGLE SHOW NIRVANA EVER PLAYED, AS WELL AS EVERY KNOWN LIVE RECORDING, OFTEN WITH MULTIPLE SOURCE RECORDINGS OF THE SAME PERFORMANCE LISTED, DOWN TO WHAT TYPE OF EQUIPMENT WAS USED TO RECORD IT.  EVERYTHING WHICH HAS NOT YET ESCAPED THE HEAVILY GUARDED VAULTS OF NIRVANA AND THE COBAIN ESTATE (NO DOUBT THERE ARE STILL SOME GEMS BEING SAVED IN THERE) IS AVAILABLE IN ONE FORM OR ANOTHER ONLINE.

THIS AUDIO WAS RIPPED FROM THE YOUTUBE VIDEO, THE COVER ART IS THE FLYER FOR THE SHOW.  DALE CROVER IS APPARENTLY PLAYING DRUMS.  THEY PLAYED A LOT OF STUFF OFF OF BLEACH, OBVIOUSLY, A FEW SONGS THAT ENDED UP ON INCESTICIDE, SOME MATERIAL THAT WOULD END UP ON NEVERMIND (INCLUDING "PAY TO PLAY," THE EARLY VERSION OF "STAY AWAY"), PLUS A COUPLE SONGS THAT DIDN'T MAKE IT ON TO ANY OF THE INITIAL FOUR ALBUMS.  ON THE ORIGINAL SOURCE AUDIO, "DIVE" CUTS OUT PART WAY THROUGH THE FIRST VERSE AND PICKS BACK UP NEARLY HALFWAY THROUGH THE SONG, SO TIME AND CARE WAS TAKEN TO USE SOME TECHNOLOGICAL WIZARDRY TO PIECE IT BACK TOGETHER, AND IT'S AS THOUGH THE ENTIRE TRACK NEVER HAD ANY MISSING AUDIO AT ALL.  THE SOUND QUALITY IS RATED AT 8.5 ON LIVENIRVANA.COM. AFTER "SCHOOL," DALE CROVER BEGINS JAMMING THE DRUMS TO "TV EYE" BY IGGY POP FOR A LITTLE BIT.  "LITHIUM" FALLS APART TOWARD THE END, AS WELL AS "BEEN A SON."  AFTER (OR MAYBE DURING) "BLEW," KRIST BEGINS JAMMING "EYES FLYS" BY THE MELVINS.  THE BAND ENDS THE SET WITH "VERSE, CHORUS, VERSE."  



THE AUDIENCE IS QUITE LIVELY AND EXCITED, AND SEEM TO BE HAVING A LOT OF FUN.  THERE ARE THREE OTHER UNCIRCULATED AUDIO SOURCES RUMOURED TO EXISTENCE.  APPARENTLY THIS ONE SURFACED IN 2003 ("AUD No. 1a").  THE EQUIPMENT USED TO RECORD THIS SOURCE IS UNKNOWN, BUT IT WAS SURFACED ON A SONY WM-D6 CASSETTE AND TRANSFERRED TO FLAC FORMAT.  THE SECOND CIRCULATED SOURCE, "AUD No 1b," IS ALSO FROM THIS CASSETTE, BUT WAS TRANSFERRED TO A CD-R, AND HAS A QUALITY GRADE OF 8, VERSES THE FLAC'S GRADE OF 8.5.  SOURCE "AUD No 1b" IS MISSING EVERYTHING AFTER "BEEN A SON," BUT APPARENTLY DOES NOT HAVE THE AUDIO CUT OUT DURING "DIVE" THAT SOURCE "AUD No. 1a" HAS.  THE DOORMAN CLAIMS THAT ALL SHOWS OF THIS ERA WERE RECORDED USING A VIDEO CAMERA SET UP TOWARD THE BACK OF THE ROOM WITH A FRONTAL VIEW OF THE FULL BAND, BUT THE VIDEOS HAVE APPARENTLY NEVER BEEN COPIED.  DOORS OPENED AT 8 PM.  OPENERS WERE CHEMICAL PEOPLE AND GRANFALOON BUS.

THE NEIGHBORS WERE A FAST-PACED HARDCORE STAPLE OF THE SAN DIEGO PUNK SCENE, BEGINNING SOMETIME AROUND 1993 OR 1994.  THEIR DEBUT WAS THIS SELF-TITLED CASSETTE, RELEASED ON DELUX RECORDS IN 1994.  THERE WERE SEVERAL DIFFERENT LINE-UPS, ALL OF WHICH WERE LED BY KEN LEEK ON VOCALS.  THE OTHER MEMBERS WHICH MADE UP THE NEIGHBORS' FIRST INCARNATION WERE (PRESUMABLY) FRANK ANDREWS AND KEVEN KEMERLING ON GUITARS, CLINT KEMERLING ON BASS, AND JOHN BAILLUEL ON DRUMS. THIS SAME LINE UP PERFORMED ON THE 1995 7 INCH EP, "I'M NO GENTLEMAN," ALSO RELEASED ON DELUX RECORDS (DLX009). NOT A LOT OF INFORMATION ON THE 1994 PERIOD IS AVAILABLE ON THE WEB, SO IT IS MERELY AN ASSUMPTION THAT THESE WERE THE SAME MEMBERS WHO PLAYED ON THE CASSETTE. THE PHOTO OF THE ARTWORK AND CASSETTE ABOVE WERE OBTAINED FROM THEIR DISCOGS.COM PAGE AT THE TIME, THIS CASSETTE WAS INFAMOUS AROUND SAN DIEGO DUE TO THE QUALITY OF THE NEIGHBORS' UNIQUE PUNK ROCK SOUND, AS WELL AS THE COVER PHOTO WHICH ALLEGEDLY SHOWCASED THE SURGICALLY REATTACHED PENIS OF JOHN WAYNE BOBBITT (WHO'S WIFE FAMOUSLY SEVERED IT WITH A KNIFE DURING AN ARGUMENT AND TOSSED IT OUT OF THE WINDOW OF HER MOVING CAR).  



IN 1996 THE NEIGHBORS INDEPENDENTLY RELEASED A CD CALLED "WE REFUSE TO KISS ASS/WE LOVE OUR WEENIE," WHICH HAD A NOTABLY TIGHTER, FASTER, AND SLIGHTLY MORE AGGRESSIVE SOUND.  AT THIS POINT, FRANK ANDREW WAS SWAPPED OUT FOR JASON CASTANENDA ON GUITAR.

IN 1998 THE EP "THE MORE MONEY ONE HAS, THE MORE IMPORTANT IS ONE'S LIFE" WAS ISSUED ON 7 INCH VINYL AND CD BY THE NETHERLANDS LABEL KANGAROO RECORDS.  SCOTT MILLER REPLACED JASON CASTANENDA ON SECOND GUITAR, AND JOHN HENDERSON REPLACED JOHN BAILLUEL ON DRUMS.  THEY CONTINUED TO DEVELOPE THEIR STYLE INTO WHAT THEY WOULD BECOME RENOWNED FOR, DARKLY PESSEMISTIC, MORBID AND SARCASTIC LYRICS OVER A BACKDROP OF HYPERACTIVE TIGHT HARDCORE PUNK.  AT SOME POINT, A FOUR-SONG CASSETTE EP (THE SAME FOUR TRACKS ON EACH SIDE) ENTITLED "I WANT YOU TO THINK ABOUT FREEDOM, WHAT IT MEANS, AND HOW IT CONTRADICTS WITH GOOD OLD AMERICAN BELIEFS," WAS INDEPENDENTLY RELEASED BY THE BAND.  IT CONTAINED THREE TRACKS FROM THE 1998 EP, AND A TRACK THAT WAS ON THE 2000 KANGAROO RECORDS 7 INCH COMPILATION, "THIS IS KANGAROO, NOT BERKELEY."  IT IS UNCLEAR WHEN THIS CASSETTE WAS RELEASED.


THE NEIGHBORS BEGAN TO PROGRESS EVEN FURTHER INTO A DARK AND  EXTREME DIRECTION, CROSSING INTO THE REALM OF POWERVIOLENCE, WITH 2001'S "NEGATIVE ATTRACTION," WHICH WAS RELEASED BY SIX WEEKS RECORDS ON 12 INCH VINYL AND CD.  THE LINE-UP REMAINED THE SAME WITH THE EXCEPTION OF ED DIFFNER TAKING OVER ON DRUMS AFTER THE DEPARTURE OF JOHN HENDERSON.  IT IS IMPORTANT TO NOTE THAT ALAN SPURGEON PLAYED DRUMS IN THE BAND FOR SOME TIME, AND ALTHOUGH HE DIDN'T PLAY ON ANY OF THE RELEASES, HE MADE A SUBSTANTIAL CONTRIBUTION TO THE BAND.  YEARS LATER KEN AND ALAN WOULD COLLABORATE IN THE THRASH POWERVIOLENCE MONSTER THAT WAS TITAN ARUM.  (KEN WOULD ALSO GO ON TO FRONT PIG LIFE AFTER TITAN ARUM SPLIT UP.  BOTH BANDS ARE WELL WORTH YOUR EFFORT TO SEEK OUT.)  
NOW THAT A STARTING POINT HAS BEEN PROVIDED HERE WITH THE NEIGHBORS' DEBUT 1994 CASSETTE, YOU CAN GO CHECK OUT THE REST OF THEIR MATERIAL AND SEE WHY THEY WERE, AND STILL ARE, CONSIDERED ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT HARDCORE BANDS TO EVER COME OUT OF SAN DIEGO.  THIS AUDIO WAS TAKEN FROM THE CASSETTE, SO PLEASE EXCUSE THE SMALL AMOUNT OF TAPE NOISE THAT IS PRESENT.  IT SHOULDN'T BE THAT BIG OF A DEAL CONSIDERING CASSETTES ARE FASHIONABLE AGAIN...
