CENTIPEDES CIRCUS IS A MULTIFARIOUS PROJECT FORMED SOMETIME AROUND THE MID-1990'S IN THE FOOTHILLS OF EASTERN SAN DIEGO COUNTY. THE PRIMARY CREATIVE FORCE BEHIND CENTIPEDES CIRCUS IS A RECLUSIVE, ECCENTRIC MUSICIAN WHO IS KNOWN SIMPLY AS RYAN H. HE BEGAN WRITING SONGS STARTING ABOUT 1994 AND CONTINUES TO WRITE MATERIAL UP TO THE PRESENT. THE LACK OF A SUSTAINED BACKING BAND HAS FORCED HIM TO MAINLY WRITE AND PLAY ACOUSTIC, FOLK-ORIENTED SONGS WITH ODD TITLES, QUIRKY LYRICS, WHICH SOMETIMES CONTAIN CRUDE AND OFFENSIVE SUBJECT MATTER. OVER THE DECADES, THERE HAVE PROBABLY BEEN UPWARDS OF TWO HUNDRED SONGS PENNED UNDER THE UMBRELLA OF CENTIPEDES CIRCUS.
BETWEEN 1999 AND 2000, AT ZAROFF STUDIOS IN MOUNTAINTOP, CALIFORNIA, A COLLECTION OF THIRTY-THREE SONGS CALLED "CAT LESIONS" WERE ASSEMBLED AND RECORDED ON A FOUR-TRACK CASSETTE RECORDER, USING ACOUSTIC AND ELECTRIC GUITARS, SYNTHESIZERS, VARIOUS PERCUSSION INSTRUMENTS, AND MISCELLANEOUS SAMPLES. IF THE MATERIAL HAD TO BE DESCRIBED, IT COULD BE COMPARED TO SOMETHING BETWEEN BECK, WEEN, AND MID 1960'S TO EARLY 1970'S PSYCHEDELIC ROCK, FOLK, AND AMERICANA. THE VAST MAJORITY OF THE MUSIC AND WAS WRITTEN, ARRANGED AND PERFORMED BY RYAN H., WITH SOME ADDITIONAL SONGWRITING BY SOMEONE CALLED ELLIOT C. GHALDING (WHO MAY OR MAY NOT NOW BE DECEASED). ALL LYRICS AND VOCALS WERE WRITTEN AND PERFORMED BY RYAN H. THE BASS ON THIS RECORDING WAS WRITTEN AND PERFORMED BY BASSIST MIKE GRAY, AND LEAD GUITAR ON ONE TRACK, "LEAVING STONECREEK," WAS PERFORMED BY CHANCE BRAY.
"CAT LESIONS" WAS TRANSFERRED TO MP3 FORMAT AT SOME POINT, THEN SAT ON A HARD DRIVE FOR YEARS AFTER BEING FORGOTTEN ABOUT. IT WAS RECENTLY RECOVERED AND FINALLY RELEASED IN DIGITAL FORMAT BY PLASTIC FACT RECORDS IN COORDINATION WITH MOUNTAINTOP MUZIC. THIS IS DEFINITELY SOMETHING THAT SHOULD BE FILED UNDER LO-FI, AND CONTAINS SOME FAIRLY CONTROVERSIAL TOPICS, AS WELL AS LYRICS THAT COULD BE CONSIDERED OFFENSIVE. FAIR WARNING.

BEFORE BLATZ AND THE CRIMINALS, THERE WERE THE GR'UPS. FEATURING DUALING VOCALS FROM FUTURE BLATZ MEMEBERS JESSE LUSCIOUS AND ANNA JOY, THEY PLAYED A BLEND OF GARAGE PUNK AND ROCKABILLY, AND HAD A TOTAL OF FOUR RELEASES (INCLUDING THIS ONE, WHICH WAS MOST LIKELY THE SECOND RELEASE, FOLLOWING A SINGLE-SIDED CASSETTE, BOTH RELEASED IN 1992). IT SEEMS THEY WERE ONLY ACTIVE FOR ABOUT TWO YEARS, UNTIL THE FORMATION OF BLATZ, AND LATER THE CRIMINALS, IN THE MID-1990'S. EVENTUALLY THE GR'UPS REUNITED AROUND 2011 AND RELEASED A COMPILATION LP AND PLAYED A FEW SHOWS TO PROMOTE THE RECORD.
THIS EP WAS RECORDED JUNE 13, 1992 BY KEVIN ARMY, BILL, AND LINT AT SOUND VISION, MIXED BY THE GR'UPS WITH KEVIN ARMY JUNE 19, 1992 AT DANCING DOG, AND MASTERED BY KEN LEE AT SONIC ARTS. THE LINE UP CONSISTED OF JESSE LUSCIOUS AND ANNA JOY ON VOCALS, DEB DISASTER (QUEEN MAB) ON BASS, MATT FREEMAN (RANCID, M.D.C.) ON GUITAR, AND KAMALA LYN PARKS (CRINGER, NAKED AGGRESSION) ON DRUMS. THE TRACKS FROM THIS EP WERE LATER USED AS THE FIRST FIVE TRACKS ON THE 2011 COMPILATION LP, "A LI'L LOST." THE LYRICS TO THE SONG, "OINK," WERE COWRITTEN BY JESSE LUSCIOUS AND ANNIE LALANIA FROM BLATZ.
