 RICE

FUCK YOU, THIS IS RICE!!!
LOOUKOUT RECORDS, 1994 - LK093CD

FROM PUNK-USA.TYPEPAD.COM: "LK 93 (LOOKOUT! 93) WAS FULL LENGTH RELEASE FROM A BAND THAT HAD ALREADY BEEN INACTIVE FOR A COUPLE OF YEARS, YET HAD MADE AN IMPRESSION ON CHRIS APPELGREN DURING HIS RUN INS WITH THE STRANGELY GIMMICKED SAN DIEGO GUYS OVER THE YEARS.  THE BAND WAS 'RICE' - A BAND INFLUENCED FROM THE POSITIVE HARDCORE BANDS OF THE LATE 80'S, BUT WITH A HEAVY DOSE OF OFF THE WALL PUNK HUMOR."
FROM ALLMUSIC.COM (BIO BY STEVE HUEY): "THE SAN DIEGO-BASED HARDCORE BAND RICE WAS A GOOFY SATIRE OF ANARCHIST PUNK THAT REMAINED STARTLINGLY TRUE TO THE BAND'S NAME.  THEIR LYRICS HAD ALL THE MILITANT SLOGANEERING AND IMPASSIONED RHETORIC OF STANDARD-ISSUE POLITICAL HARDCORE, BUT INSTEAD OF FREEDOM, EVERY SONG THEY WROTE WAS ABOUT... RICE.  MUSICALLY, RICE'S HORN SECTION MADE THEM ROUGHLY COMPARABLE TO THE SOUL-INFLICTED NATION OF ULYSSES, OR TO TRASH-PUNKERS ROCKET FROM THE CRYPT, WITH WHOM RICE SHARED PERSONNEL.  RICE'S LINE UP FEATURED LEAD SINGER ROB VASQUEZ (ALSO OF THE PEECHEES, THE LEFTIES, THE CREEPS, AND SEMIAUTOMATIC), GUITARIST JASON SOARES (ALSO OF PHYSICS, THINGY, AND ASPECTS OF PHYSICS), BASSIST CARLOS CANEDO, (PEECHEES, BEEHIVE & THE BARRACUDAS), DRUMMER MATT ANDERSON (THE HEAD OF LOCAL INDIE GRAVITY RECORDS), TROMBONIST DUSTIN MILSAP (BEEHIVE & THE BARRACUDAS), AND SAXAPHONIST APOLLO 9 (ROCKET FROM THE CRYPT).  THERE WERE ALSO AUXILLARY CONTRIBUTIONS FROM SEVERAL OTHERS, INCLUDING DRUMMER CHARLES CLAYTON AND ROCKET FROM THE CRYPT HORNMAN JC 2000.  FORMED IN 1991, RICE ISSUED THEIR DEBUT SINGLE 'IN RICE WE SURVIVE,' ON THE VINYL COMMUNICATIONS LABEL.  THEY APPEARED ON THE LOOKOUT! RECORDS SAMPLER 'CAN OF PORK' IN 1992, AND IN 1994 LOOKOUT! ISSUED THEIR ONLY ALBUM, 'FUCK YOU, THIS IS RICE!!!'  ITS MEMBERS HAD PLENTY OF OTHER PROJECTS, AND HAVING TAKEN THE JOKE AS FAR AS IT WOULD GO, RICE SUBSEQUENTLY CALLED IT A DAY."
ROB VASQUEZ: "THE CONCEPT OF 'RICE' ORIGINALLY STARTED WHEN I WAS DRIVING THE BAND 'STRUGGLE' ON TOUR IN EARLY 1991.  WE HAD JUST LEFT THIS HOUSE WE STAYED AT IN THE BAY AREA AND HAD BEEN ON THE ROAD FOR NEARLY AN HOUR.  WE STOPPED TO GET FOOD AT DENNY'S AND I REALIZED THAT I LEFT THIS RICE COOKER THAT MY GRANDMA GAVE ME AT THAT HOUSE, SO WE DROVE BACK AND GOT IT.  THAT DEDICATION AND CHANGING MOST OF THE LYRICS TO WHATEVER HARDCORE SONG THAT WAS PLAYING ON MY TAPE PLAYER IN THE CAR IN THE RIDE HOME FROM THE BAY AREA SHOWS SEALED WHAT WOULD BECOME RICE...  THE FIRST LYRICS I WROTE WERE REALLY DUMB, JUST PUTTING WORDS TOGETHER, AND THEN YELLING 'RICE' IN BETWEEN TO HAMMER THE POINT JUST TO MATCH THE RAWNESS OF THE MUSIC.  WHEN WE ACTUALLY STARTED REALLY WRITING HARDCORE SONGS, IS WHEN I DECIDED TO WRITE THE SONGS LIKE HOW A HARDCORE BAND SHOULD, WITH A SERIOUS FRONT.  THIS WAS THE EARLY 1990'S, WHERE ALMOST EVERY BAND WE LIKED AND WERE INTO OR KNEW ABOUT, HAD THE SAME MESSAGE OF UNITY AND WERE REALLY POLITICALLY CHARGED.  SOMETIMES IT FELT LIKE PREACHING TO THE CONVERTED, SO I WENT THAT ROUTE IN WRITING SONGS ABOUT RICE WITH POLITICAL UNDERTONES."  ZIP FILE COMES WITH A PDF OF THE INSERT BOOKLET.
